The following study seeks to identify the context for the approval of Constitutional Amendment nº 97/2017, analysing the dynamics imposed by the choices of the original constituent, namely: the electoral system of proportional representation with open list, the electoral districts of high magnitude and the presidential regime, which resulted in the coalition presidentialism. In this regard, the recent Constitutional Amendment nº 97/17 is understood as an attempt to improve the current system, without significant changes in the electoral system. On this subject, the constitutional amendment is conceived, indicating two essential elements: the implementation of the performance clause and the end of party coalitions in proportional elections. In view of these changes, an analysis of their consequences is made in the 2018 general elections, when the performance clause began to be applied, as well as in the municipal elections of 2020, when the end of the coalitions came into force. In the end, it appears that the Constitutional Amendment nº 97/17 has met the expectations generated, with a tendency to reduce the number of existing parties and a slight restructure of the party system.
